Our aim is to provide the best possible environment for all our members in order for them to realise their potential in running and support their own individual goals. This therefore covers everyone from beginners to marathon runners. We have created this list of Questions & Answers to try and answer the most common questions you may have, but if yours is not on this list then please get in touch.
I’ve never run before. Will I be too slow?
Everyone starts off as a beginner at some point. Infact a large proportion of our new members at the start of the year are beginners or haven’t had much running experience. As a result we introduced the idea of a team ’system’ of beginners, intermediate and advanced to allow everyone to find their own pace. It makes it very enjoyable, and some runners even change from week to week.
No, really, I am really slow! Are you sure?
Our beginners group start training very gently with short runs and regular stops. We’ll help you train and gradually you’ll run faster and further. Don’t forget too, every runner starts as a beginner!!
Do I need special kit?
We recommend that you invest in a good pair of running shoes. Why? The pressure your body is put under whilst running is quite intense and running with the wrong, or unsuitable, shoes can cause injuries down the line. Thus we would always recommend that you visit a running specialist to have your running style analysed once you have decided running is for you. We can help with this too. To start off with just make sure you wear sturdy, comfortable training shoes though. There is a great running shop in Lancaster, and new LURC friends New Balance sometimes offer us special discounts when we visit the factory shop in Cumbria.
In terms of clothing we’d recommend you layer up! Wear lightweight layers to control your temperature. In the winter you may also want to wear gloves and a hat. Everyone is different so just wear something sensible and see what suits you. Everyone is different, and eventually you’ll find what suits you. Ask any of the Exec for some advice.
I’ve been running for years, what can you offer me?
We have a team for our experienced runners which is designed to allow faster runners the opportunity to train with people of similar ability.
Do you attend any races?
We certainly try to. It depends on demand and sorting out the logistics; you’d be amazed how much has to be done behind the scenes to organise these things! But we do our best and we have attended many races in the past and intend to do so in the future too. Members are not obliged to enter any races, it’s down to your own choice, but it’s very fun to do so!
How can I find out more about the running club?
We’ll have a stall at the 2008 Freshers Fair. Membership for 2008 will cost £4, but don’t forget that for that you get organised socials, running advice and injury prevention, a great Exec team and much much more!!
